Off the Brick Path Quilt Block Tutorial

Posted on February 6, 2019September 2, 2024 by Bonnie

This updated version of the traditional brick path quilt block is a great way to shrink that scrap pile! The tutorial will walk you through sewing one pair of 12″ quilt blocks. My finished quilt will have 15 pairs (30 total blocks) arranged 5 blocks across by 6 blocks down for a finished size of 60″ x 72″.

You’ll be sewing both blocks at the same time – one Block A and one Block B.

Start with these fabric cuts:
9 – 11″ x 1 1/2″ low volume or light-colored strips
9 – 11″ x 1 1/2″ bright strips
9 – 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ low volume or light-colored squares

Pair each 11″ low volume strip with an 11″ bright strip.

Pin each pair lengthwise and sew. Press the seam allowances toward the bright strip.

Measure each strip pair and trim if needed. Each side should measure 1 1/4″ for a full width of 2 1/2″.

Square off one end and cut each strip into four 2 1/2″ segments. (You’ll have a little extra leftover.)

Arrange each set of four segments into a “brick path”, like this:

Check to make sure that all of your paths are turned the same direction before you sew them together.

Sew the top two segments together and the bottom two segments together. Press the seam allowances toward the vertical bright strip. Sew the top and bottom together. Press this seam allowance open to cut down on bulk at the center.

Grab those low volume squares, and arrange the Block A pieces:

Now arrange the Block B pieces:

Sew the top, middle, and bottom rows. Press the seams toward the low volume squares. Sew the rows together and press well. Your completed blocks should measure 12 1/2″.

Very nice quilt blocks. I have so many jelly rolls, I think I’ll make this block bigger.

Is there a formula to make different size blocks? I need the unfinished block to be 3 1/2 inches

    Thanks
