The Indygo Junction Casserole Carry-All Review & Giveaway!

Posted on August 10, 2013 by Bonnie

I am so excited to share this cute casserole carrier with you guys! As fall approaches and the kids start back to school (or homeschool, in our case), opportunities to enjoy potluck-style gatherings start popping up all over. We always seem to be grabbing our dish from the oven and wrapping it up with all the dish towels we can gather to transport it to our dinner. You’d think that I would have made one of these long ago, wouldn’t you?

When I got an email from Indygo Junction asking if I’d like to try out one of Amy Barickman’s new patterns, I was so excited to see the Casserole Carry-All! Actually, I was really excited until I realized that it’s sewn with bias tape. If you’ve been around me much, you know that I sort of view bias tape as my sewing arch-nemesis. I loved the design of this pattern so much, though, I decided to give it a try. The way I figured it, if I could make it through sewing this casserole carrier without losing my patience, I could tell you in all honesty that this is a great pattern! I’m happy to report that not only did I make it through with my patience in tact, I enjoyed sewing it, AND I’m planning to make at least one more!

The pattern and instructions are really straight-forward and easy to follow. I used one of my handy-dandy Frixion pens to draw the quilting grid on the inside layer. And, with a swipe of my hot steam iron after quilting, the marks were gone! (Do be careful with using Frixion pens on things that won’t be washed and might be subjected to cold temperatures. That ink that disappeared can sometimes reappear if it’s not washed away before being exposed to really cold temperatures. No worries about that at all with this project!)The only place that I had a problem wasn’t even related to sewing, it was with finding spoons the right length! I assumed that the long-handled wooden spoons in my kitchen would work, but the handle wasn’t quite long enough. You can see in these pictures that the loops the spoons pass through are sort of squished together and the handle only comes out a tiny bit. My spoons are 14″ long total, and I really needed 16″ long ones. I searched all over town and didn’t turn up a single one long enough. Amazon is coming to my rescue, though, with a set of 16″ long wooden spoons that are on their way to me right now!I love that this casserole carrier has multiple layers of hook & loop tape so it works for a 9×13 rectangle dish or an 8×8 square dish. You just open it up, center your dish on it, fold over the long ends and fasten the hook & loop, then fold the spoon-handles up and you’re ready to go!The casserole carrier is also lined with insulated fleece, so when you need to hold it in your lap on the ride to the potluck, you don’t have to worry about burning yourself! Nice, huh? (Oh, the dish above? That’s the gluten-free, real-food brownie recipe that I’ve been experimenting with! I think it’s finally ready to share with you. You’ll have to check back next Saturday to find it!)Indygo Junction didn’t just send me one pattern, by the way. They sent me two! I get to give away the second one to one of you! But that’s not all! Since I was already ordering 16″ long spoons for my Casserole Carry-All, I ordered a second set to go along with the pattern to the winner! To enter, just leave a comment below sharing your favorite potluck dish! Be sure to include an email so I can contact you if you win! (Email addresses are never shared.) Entries will be accepted through Friday, August 16th.

I love the cheesy potatoes everyone brings! Everyone has a slightly different variation on the recipe. Some use cream of chicken and some cream of celery. Some put diced green peppers some just chopped onion. I’ve seen it with bits of bacon on top too although I don’t like it that way:)

I love the look of this pattern and would love to win!

Ooh! I was just looking a craftsy for similar things!

My fav casserole is breakfast casserole: (and everything can be adapted to gluten free)

    Ingredients:
    Rice Krispies
    Shredded cheese
    Browned crumbled sausage
    Cooked rice
Cream of celery soup (I’ve done a homemade version for gluten free)
    3 eggs

In a greased 2 qt casserole dish layer in the following order:
Rice Krispies (cover the bottom with a decent amount)
    Cheese
    Sausage
    Rice
    Cheese
    Sausage

Then, beat the eggs and combine with the cream of celery. Use a knife to poke holes in the casserole to help the egg mixture do its thing. Pour the egg mixture on and top with some more cheese.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 45-60 minutes until egg has set. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for a chance to win! My go to potluck food is sweet potatoes. The recipe is just as good doubled, which is great for church lunches!

4 cups mashed sweet potatoes (fresh is best but drained canned works too)
    1/2 cup sugar
    2 whole eggs
1/2 cup milk (may need more if you used fresh sweet potatoes)
1 tsp. Vanilla extract (real is best of course!)
    1/2 tsp. Salt
1/3 stick melted butter (again, real is best!)

Mix all above ingredients well. Sprinkle with topping. Bake at 350 degrees, covered for 30-40 minutes, uncover and bake another 10 minutes or until topping is ‘crispy’ and browned.

    Topping:
    1 cup brown sugar
    1/2 cup flour
    1/3 cup melted butter
    1 cup pecans

Every time I go anywhere, I get requests. sugar babies (mini cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon strips, sprinkled with brown sugar and baked until crispy… mmmm), sopapilla cheese cake in any of my presented forms (crescent rolls, cream cheese and sugar, more crescent rolls, then sprinkle the top with cinnamon and sugar and melted butter. I tend to add to it tho. Pumpkin and nutmeg in the filling, and instead of cinnamon sugar, I bake it plain and add a vanilla coffee glaze to the top when it’s cool. i serve the pumpkin version every thanksgiving instead of pumpkin pie now. leave the filling plain, but use the vanilla coffee glaze for brunch. add fruit. you can just do ANYTHING with this…)

I like to spice things up! I tend to hunt down a new recipe (usually on a blog or via Pinterest) each time, and just dive in! Some of my most recent dishes; cauliflower chickpea curry with rice, spinach and artichoke dip, and a delicious quinoa salad with a balsamic vinaigrette, radicchio, sundried tomatoes, fresh basil, and toasted pinenuts! I’m often the only one who brings a gluten free, vegetarian dish to the party.

Sometimes I find it backfires as I haven’t tested the recipe, so naturally being the perfectionist I am, I find myself critiquing what I could change while everyone else is enjoying the dish. But usually it works out just fine. I love trying new things!

P.S. I would love this pattern so that I could make casserole carriers for my sisters for Christmas. Where did you order your wooden spoons from? Thanks for putting your time into such an awesome blog!

My family loved it when I was growing up (we never realized it was one of those day-before-payday dishes), my kids loved it while they were growing up, and every pot luck I have taken it to, the dish is always emptied quickly. Making it always brings back fond memories of working in the kitchen with my mother when I was growing up.

I do the same thing with dish towels – it’s not very effective! I need to break down and make myself one of these… My favorite dish to bring is a casserole called Johnny Knows It (I don’t know what “it” is or who “Johnny” is, lol)

    Ingredients:

1/2 package of small pasta shells
    Medium bell pepper, chopped
    Medium onion, chopped
    1 lb ground beef
    1 can tomato soup
1 can cream of mushroom soup
As many green olives as you like – I like a lot!
2 cups shredded colby jack cheese

Preheat oven to 350. Boil the pasta per the package directions. Meanwhile, brown ground beef, adding onions and bell peppers to soften. Drain meat mixture, drain pasta, and combine. Add soups and olives in 9×13 casserole dish. Layer shredded cheese on top, and cover with foil. Put in oven for 15-20 minutes, or until cheese is melted and dish is heated through.

This dish is always a winner! It makes great leftovers if you make it at home for the family, or feeds a crowd 🙂

    M&M Salad

1 bag frozen shelled edamame beans
1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 can corn, rinsed and drained (can use frozen corn)
    1 red pepper, finely chopped
    2 green onions, sliced
1 cup cooked wild or brown rice

1/4 cup seasoned rice vinegar (or ¼c natural rice vinegar, 1T sugar, ½t salt)
    1/2 cup salad oil
1 or 2 TBLS dijon mustard
    1 TBL sugar
    salt and pepper

Blend edamame beans, black beans, corn, red pepper, green onions and rice in a large bowl. Mix remaining ingredients for dressing and toss with bean mixture. Stir salad occasionally for 3-6 hours before serving.

    Hello Bonnie,
I hope your spring is going well! My name is Katerina Alexakos, Director of Marketing at P&B Textiles. I stumbled across your lovely blog and I wanted to reach out to you about a potential collaboration with one of our new fabric lines, Fresh Pick http://www.pbtex.com/collection-fresh-pick/
I absolutely love your kitchen based quilting projects that you have posted, and I envision that to be a perfect pairing with our vibrant fun garden veggie themed fabrics. Also it seems like you have quite the passion for cooking, so that could make for an even more exciting collaboration. Ideally our company is seeking a some sort of kitchen related product (potholder/apron/casserole carry all) made from our Fresh Pick fabrics, that could be spotlighted in one of your blogposts.

I would love to send you a fat quarter pack of Fresh Pick fabrics for you to create something with. If you are interested please remit your mailing address and phone number for shipping purposes.

Let me know if this is of interest to you!

I love these carriers. Instead of using the spoon, try using a dowel rod and just sew the ends of the slots together to keep the rods from falling out. My go to is Chicken Lasagna…

1 Can Cream of Mushroom Soup
1 Can Cream of Chicken Soup
    ½ C. Mayonnaise
    1 8 oz. Sour Cream
    10 Cooked Lasagna Noodles
    1 lb Cheddar Cheese
    4 C. cooked chicken

Mix together in medium bowl the soups, mayo and sour cream. Layer in a 13×9 pan, starting with noodles, sauce, cheese. Bake in 350° oven for 30 minutes. Top with more cheddar cheese put back in oven long enough to melt the cheese.
