I really like sewing new bags for my sister, nieces and daughters every Christmas, and I think they really like receiving them. (I heard that my oldest niece loves to tell her friends when they ask about her bags that they’re one of a kind!) Handmade bags for the girls have sort of become my annual tradition. This year, I’ve been sewing messenger bags for everyone and thought I’d share my pattern with you. I hope that you’ll enjoy creating with it for yourself and your loved ones.
The tutorial is for the laptop-size messenger bag, but there are suggestions at the end for how to alter the size to your own specifications.
You can find the pattern and instructions here: Messenger Bag.
I’d love to hear from you and see pictures if you make one, and I’m always happy to answer questions. Just leave me a comment, and I’ll do my best to get back with you as soon as I can!
Don’t miss my Art-On-The-Go Kit Tutorial which makes a great stocking stuffer and, of course, my Christmas Stocking Tutorial, too! I hope they help to get you on your way to your own Handmade Holiday traditions!
Bonnie, you did it again. Thanks for another fantastic tutorial.
I just made a bag from your tutorial and LOVE it! Your tutorial was great. The bag went together really quickly and easily! THANKS!

My daughter asked me to make her a bag recently and after trying to pin down what kind of bag, it seems she had in mind some kind of messenger bag. I had a quick look for a pattern, but had sort of forgotten about it until now. I’m so happy to find this to make up for her. Thanks for sharing!

Hi there!
I write a weekly craft blog for Craft Candy, a craft consortium based in Sheffield, UK. I am pleased to inform you your messenger bag tutorial was featured in our round-up of beautiful things (‘Museround’) on a ‘Satchels’ theme. You have been fully credited for your work and we have provided links to your blog. You can see the post, and your featurette, here http://www.craft-candy.org/blog/?p=710, and see the weekly updates here at the Craft Candy Blog http://www.craft-candy.org/blog/.
Thank you very much for your inspiring creativity!

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! I ventured out to make the bag thinking that only someone as good as you could ever complete such an amazing project, but I successfully finished it! And it is adorable! Thank you for making an easy simple and well written tutorial! I love how you use fleece instead of interfacing to thicken up the bag, it lowered the cost a lot 🙂
I have pictures on my website of my completed messenger bag, I also referred to you when I wrote about my bag 🙂 Please check it out 🙂

Thanks so much! Now I know what I’m making my nieces for Christmas! They’ll get messenger bags for their lap tops and a new pair of fingerless gloves (these were a HUGE hit last year!)! I’m so excited!
Thanks for sharing this great tutorial! I made one for my little sis and blogged about it here:

Aww love these. I made a couple–one that my sister uses as a diaper bag–way cute. I got a more professional looking messenger bag for work from solo.net–but on the weekends and holidays, its all cool and cute with my denim and tshirt bag with rhinestones! 🙂
