Believe it or not, I have been sewing a few things besides pillowcases. These binder covers are a bit of a preview of an idea that I have for Christmas presents. I sewed up the one above for storing my pattern ideas and sketches. I mentioned the idea of pretty fabric binder covers to Morgan, my oldest daughter, and she insisted that she needed a stack for her college classes. Facing those early morning Government classes has to be easier when your binder is this pretty, right?
Samantha’s been a little neglected in the sewing area lately, and she really needs a few outfits that she can wear to church. I played around with overlapping the tiers in this skirt since it’s sewn with knit fabrics that won’t fray. It has sort of an intentionally messy look to it that I really like.
This print fabric is from Michael Miller’s new cotton interlocks. I love that the more well-known fabric designers are introducing knit fabrics! I just noticed on the back of the new Stitch magazine that Moda is introducing interlocks, too. Now, my biggest request is for boyish fabrics. Oh, what I would give for MM’s Rocket Rascals or Treasure Island on cotton interlock . . .
Do you ever outgrow the desire for a skirt with a little twirl factor?
I like the skirt very much! I love the idea of covering binders. A great way to spruce up a plain binder.

Could you take a moment in a post to explain all the different kinds of knits and what they’re good for? I don’t really understand the difference between interlock, stretch, jersey, etc. And, I’m not sure which one to buy for each project.

Hi, Anna! I didn’t use a pattern. I just used Samantha’s measurements and made the pattern up as I went along. I would love to do a tutorial when I have a few minutes, but I’m working on several projects that are due in early October, so it’ll be a little bit before I have time. I’ll definitely add it to my list, though, because I want to make one for me, too!
Hi, Tina! I’ve had that exact blog post running around in my head for ages. I just need to find time to sit down and put it in words. Knits aren’t really scary once you start working with them. They’re so much fun! That’s a post that I can work on while I’m watching football practice, so I’ll work on putting it together this week. (One of these days, I’d LOVE to write a book about working with knits!)
